Architectural Design

At our small architecture firm, we focus on personal service and custom designs that emphasize elegant solutions, quality craftsmanship, environmental and life-cycle sustainability, and—most importantly—our client’s needs. Our approach begins with developing a thoughtful understanding of our client and their unique requirements, preferences, and even what brings them delight. At the same time we thoroughly explore the physical and environmental characteristics of their building site from its macro context to its specific situation and history. Our ultimate aim is to create a building that is in balance with the client’s needs and the spirit of the place.

This holistic design approach also connects the interiors with the exteriors, fostering a sense of well being and community. Our designs prioritize life-cycle sustainability, passive solar principles, natural ventilation, and water conservation, ensuring that each building minimizes its operational costs, its maintenance costs, and its ecological footprint while maximizing comfort and functionality.

Historic Preservation

While we are not Historic Preservation specialists, we do strive for thoughtful design that harmonizes contemporary needs and building technologies with the rich narratives of historic neighborhoods. With extensive experience working within historic districts, we are dedicated to the principles of Historic Preservation ensuring that our projects respect and enrich the cultural heritage of the spaces we inhabit.

Our approach begins with a deep understanding of each site's history and context, allowing us to create designs that not only honor the past but also enhance the present—distinguishing the old from the new and enriching the historic fabric. We strive to create environments where the historical and the contemporary coexist beautifully, catering to the needs of current occupants while respecting the legacy of the places we serve.

Whether restoring an historic property, adding a new addition, or reutilizing and adapting the old for a new purpose, our commitment to thoughtful design guarantees that we protect the essence of our built heritage while fostering a sense of belonging and continuity for future generations.

Interiors and Casework

We believe that exceptional architecture is understood through its phenomena and our nuanced interactions within it. Therefore, we approach our designs from within as well as from without. The use and feel of each space and their interconnection with each other and the outside world, the materiality, proportions, and natural light, all drive our design thinking and critical decision making. This fosters environments that not only meet clients’ needs but also elevate daily experiences. Our methodology emphasizes the importance of the interior space as an extension of, and often, a driver for the building’s final form.

Practice

Schreyerhof Studio is a process-driven design studio concentrating on a contemporary architecture of place, use, and idea. Place and use are specific to the client’s location, needs, and desires. The idea is an essential expression of the two constructs—place and use—as they are focused upon by the architect within the creative act of making. As such, the idea is an artifact of the creative process—the thing made—and the media used to make it.

In architecture this process includes and concludes within the materiality of the physical building as it is the ensuing vehicle for otherwise undetermined space. The built thing, ultimately the built environment and its phenomena, is thus the resulting idea and unique to its place and use, site and client. It is a specifically crafted and hewed form and an occupied space in its element to be felt, seen, utilized, enjoyed, depended upon, reckoned with, and interpreted.
